Reflections on Eagle AK
There are lots of places I would like to go. Places I would like to return to. And then, three weeks ago Eagle AK called to me and I could not ignore her. Upon arrival there it was clear that Spirit is calling many people from all over the USA and Canada to come to the aid of Alaskans in need of encouragement and relief. Words don't do justice to the experience. Pictures do a small telling of the story. The Mennonites and Samaritan's Purse are doing incredible work. Others are there, like me, because the news spoke to their hearts and they knew they had to go help. When people ask about the experience I find it is so deeply a part of my soul now, that I feel more like encouraging others to go help rather than trying to describe what I saw. Just picture Katrina in Alaska. That's one way to describe it. And winter is upon Eagle, with little time left to to remediate the huge needs there. Today I received a card from the citizens of Eagle. As I read it, tears filled my eyes. As one of 3 ladies who went to Eagle representing St Mary Episcopal Church, we made such a small dent is such a large endeavor. Eagle is such a special historic Alaskan town and village. It holds such a quiet life away from all that distracts in the larger world. Eagle is such a place of beauty at the top of the world that was ravaged by an unprecendented flood in May 2009. The people who live in Eagle AK have needs and rights for safety and restoration to their homes as do any people anywhere. My prayer is that Spring 2010 brings many other friends and neighbors to Eagle AK. The need for continued assistance will still be there next year. Consider going in Spring 2010, or helping with fund raisers that you hear of as time goes by. There are lots of places I would like to go to. Places I would like to return to. Three weeks ago Eagle AK called to me and I had to go... Photos can be viewed at http://www.justnowalaska.com/ at the Eagle Flood tab.
